Panchayat

Poothrikka Grama Panchayat was formed during the period 1953–54. The first President of the Panchayat was Mr. K. V. Mathulla. The first woman member was Mrs. Rachel Joseph, and the first Scheduled Caste representative was Mr. Kuttappan Kakkara.The Panchayat has since been led by several Presidents, including Mr. P. M. Pailipilla, Mr. K. N. Parameswaran Nair, Mr. C. K. Varughese, Mr. V. K. Raju, Mrs. Annamma Yohannan, Mrs. Sarasamma Thankappan, Mr. Nibu K. Kuriakose, Mrs. Dolly Saju, Mrs. Shiji Ajayan, Mr. T. P. Varghese, Mr. Mathews Kummannoor, and Mrs. Pooja Jomon.At present, the Panchayat consists of 16 wards, of which 7 are reserved for women.

HISTORY

Poothrikka Grama Panchayat was formed during 1953–54, following the activities of the local Gramodharana Sabha. Freedom fighters N.V. Chacko and S. Sankara Warrier played major roles in the area’s development. An Ayurvedic dispensary and several primary schools were established under the leadership of Thenungal Achan of Kolenchery Church. St. Peter’s School at Kolenchery later became a full-fledged high school. The region was once controlled by various landlords, temples, churches, and royal families. Farmers cultivated land under tenancy systems and paid rent through agricultural produce. The agrarian movements in Kerala later helped cultivators gain ownership rights over their land, leading to the growth of small-scale farming.
