1. Kolenchery Church

Kolenchery Church is known as the St. Peter's and St. Paul's Orthodox Syrian Church. Located in Kolenchery in Ernakulam district, it is one of the prominent historic churches of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.Historical records suggest that the church was established between the 7th and 9th centuries. It is also believed that it was founded in the 9th century by Thankan Mappila of the Kolenchery family. The name of the place and the church is said to have originated from a family that migrated from Kozhenchery.Before the establishment of this church, the Syrian Christians of Kolenchery used to travel to Piravom Church and Kottur Church for worship.By the end of the 19th century, disputes within the Malankara Church also affected Kolenchery Church. Conflicts between the Jacobite and Orthodox factions often led to tensions, and the church had to be closed several times following court orders. Later, arrangements were made through the court to conduct worship services by allocating separate time schedules for both factions.
